THE BELL HOMESTEAD: OVER A CENTURY OF CONNECTIONS

Take a journey through more than a hundred years of Bell Homestead history. Built in 1858, this sturdy homestead became the first Canadian residence for Alexander Graham Bell and his parents in 1870. Here, he discovered the fundamental principle upon which his most famous invention – the telephone – would work. This presentation speaks about the eleven years that the Bells called Brantford home, as well as the site’s evolution as a National Historic Site, through great stories and photographs.

MEET THE BELL LADIES

Alexander Graham Bell had some extraordinary women in his life. This presentation will introduce you to five such ladies, beginning with the first to know him – his mother, Eliza. We will explore her life as well as that of his wife - Mabel Hubbard Bell, and his daughters - Elsie and Marian. Lastly, we will delve into the life of the last member of the Bell family who knew the inventor, his granddaughter - Dr. Mabel Grosvenor. You’ll meet these extraordinary women through family writings and anecdotes, photographs, and personal reminiscences.

LIFE ON THE LINE: THE EVOLUTION OF THE HOME TELEPHONE

Take a nostalgic look back at that indispensable instrument of communication. We all remember the telephone that we grew up with. Now see how it evolved over the years, through an entertaining presentation featuring classic vintage Bell Telephone ads. Here’s a chance to reminisce, admire, and laugh at 75 years of marketing – everything from the convenience of an extension phone in 1909, telephone etiquette in wartime, telephones to match your décor in the 1960s, and modern styles of the 70s and 80s.
